Interchange Fees & Their Regulation

This volume collects a series of articles I have written, with various collaborators, over the last
decade concerning interchange fees. Many of the pieces were written in 2011 in connection with
initiatives to regulate interchange fees in the United States (as a result of federal legislation) and the
European Union (as a result of antitrust cases brought by the European Commission). My research
for these articles was funded by a variety of large financial institutions in the US and Europe. The
opinions do not necessarily reflect the views of anyone other than me and the other authors of the

I thank Howard Chang and Richard Schmalensee with whom I have collaborated on this topic
closely since the middle 1990s and from whom I have learned a great deal.
